Cochlear Implants and Related Research

Colorado Neurological InstituteThe CNI Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center is the region's largest and most comprehensive cochlear implant program. The Center's goal is to improve sound detection and communication ability for both children and adults who suffer from severe to profound hearing loss. The professionals at the Center realize use of this technology is one option available to patients, and is a choice made by each individual patient. The Center's team approach assures that each patient's care is thorough and comprehensive; from initial evaluation to rehabilitation.

The Center officially opened as a program of the Colorado Neurological Institute in 1995, but most team members came to the Center from the Denver Ear Institute, a non-profit cochlear implant center that had been in existence since the 1970's. The Denver Ear Institute closed due to financial hardship, but was instrumental in establishing the basis for a strong team of committed professionals.

A Leading Role in Research for Cochlear Implants

Under the leadership of Medical Director, David C. Kelsall, M.D., the Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center offers cutting-edge technology and is a major research facility for the development of current cochlear implant devices. The Center played a pivotal role in clinical trials leading to the FDA approval of the current devices on the market. The Center also serves as a training facility for physicians from North and South America who are learning cochlear implant surgical techniques.

The field of cochlear implants is very dynamic in that there is constant effort to improve the technology. The advantage of this has been that our patients are assured of receiving the most up-to-date technology. Our commitment to research is strong, and this will continue well into the future.
