Cochlear Implants and Related Research
The Center officially opened as a program of the Colorado Neurological Institute in 1995, but most team members came to the Center from the Denver Ear Institute, a non-profit cochlear implant center that had been in existence since the 1970's. The Denver Ear Institute closed due to financial hardship, but was instrumental in establishing the basis for a strong team of committed professionals. A Leading Role in Research for Cochlear ImplantsUnder the leadership of Medical Director, David C. Kelsall, M.D., the Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center offers cutting-edge technology and is a major research facility for the development of current cochlear implant devices. The Center played a pivotal role in clinical trials leading to the FDA approval of the current devices on the market. The Center also serves as a training facility for physicians from North and South America who are learning cochlear implant surgical techniques. The field of cochlear implants is very dynamic in that there is constant effort to improve the technology. The advantage of this has been that our patients are assured of receiving the most up-to-date technology. Our commitment to research is strong, and this will continue well into the future.
