Rocky Mountain Ear Center, PC - Hearing, balance, facial nerve and ear disorders

Videonystagmography (VNG)

This balance test will assist us in evaluating your inner ear balance mechanism. This test takes approximately 90 minutes. You will wear electronic goggles over your eyes to record eye movement for the duration of the test. During one portion of the test, a small air irrigator will be used to change the temperature (both cool and warm) of your ear canal. This process may cause you to feel temporarily dizzy or lightheaded. For this reason, you may want to make prior arrangements in case you are unable to drive yourself home.

Since many variables can affect the test results, please observe the following instructions. Failure to do so may require that we reschedule testing.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Do not eat for at least 4 hours before the test. (*You may eat a light meal prior to testing if you cannot fast for medical reasons, such as diabetes or hypoglycemia.)
  2. No alcoholic beverages 48 hours before the test.
  3. No sedatives, sleeping pills, cold medications, antihistamines, muscle relaxants or dizziness medications (i.e.: valium, xanax, antivert, meclizine) 48 hours before the test. DO NOT discontinue other prescription medications.
  4. You will be lying down on a table, please wear comfortable clothing.
  5. Please do not wear eye make-up. The goggles are unable to record eye movements from eyes which are wearing mascara. If your eye make-up is tattooed on, please let us know immediately so that we may make other arrangements.

NOTE: Please notify our office at (303)783-9220 at least 24 hours in advance if a cancellation is necessary. Failure to do so may result in a $100.00 charge.
