Flouride Protocol

General Information
Your doctor has prescribed fluoride to treat your hearing loss.  Fluoride is given to patients with otosclerosis to stop the progression of hearing loss associated with this disease, and to retard the further deterioration of the cochlear or hearing nerve.

FLOURICAL is the name of the medication that you should take.  This is available without a prescription and is usually available in health food and vitamin stores.  It can also be ordered by most pharmacies.  FLOURICAL contains 364 mg of calcium per tablet.

Specific Instructions
Your doctor would like you to take FLOURICAL as indicated below.  The different doses relate to the type and degree of hearing loss that you have

______FLOURICAL 2 tablets THREE TIMES a day for one year.

______FLOURICAL 2 tablets THREE TIMES a day for two years.

In addition to aid with the absorption of the FLOURICAL, you need to take a multivitamin that contains at least 400 units of VITAMIN D, - take 1 tablet of least two times a week.

Hearing should be monitored with hearing tests every 6 months while taking the medication.

Side Effects

While generally safe, there are some side effects to be aware of.  Please contact us if these develop.

        Nausea and stomach upset.
        Larger doses may cause brown discoloration of teeth.
        Do not take this medication if you have serious kidney problems.
        Pregnant or nursing mothers should stop FLOURICAL
        Allergic Reaction with skin rash, or wheezing.
        In children under 12, dose should be reduced.
